A flying visit to Honduras, only approximately 10 kilometres across the border from Guatemala. Copan was a little cobblestone village with a quiet and friendly atmosphere. We spent the evening taking a look around the town, having some happy hour drinks, and eating dinner.
The next morning we went to big draw card – the Copan Ruins. I know that we have been to ruins before, but this site had a number of columns (called Stelae) and hieroglyph staircase. All up I think that we were there for a little over 2 hours (so a small, compact site) but took as many photographs as the other sites.
There is a conservation project that has started to reintroduce the national bird, the Scarlet Macaw, to the ruins. There were just under a dozen flying around and making a bit of a racket during our tour.
All up I feel as though Honduras has more to offer, but I have been assured that apart from the islands on the eastern part of the country, we are not missing much. I think that I will try to get back here once the violence in the country settles down a bit and explore for myself.
