Our return to San Jose was sad but necessary. Laurence had not slept well all week and I was getting snappy. We checked into our hotel and proceeded to eat and sleep. After a much needed sleep through the night and a sleep in, Laurence had come back to life. We spent the next few days wondering around San Jose, seeing the sights. I cannot say that there was much to see, but we headed into the central market, walked along their shopping street, restocked our supplies, and washed almost every piece of clothing we own. On the evening of the fourth night we met our new tour group.
The next morning we headed to Puerto Viejo by local bus. The bus was to take 5 hours, without air conditioning, which would have been fine if the windows opened. Both Laurence and I were sweating within the first couple of hours, and drooping by the time we arrived. Also, heading from San Jose to the coast showed a marked increase in the outside temperature (from early 20’s to early 30’s). We explored the little coastal town, had a few happy hour drinks, and ate dinner at a local restaurant (I am liking their prawn stir-fry rice). The next morning we rented bicycles and rode out to the Jaguar Rescue Centre. Much to our disappointment the centre was named at a time when they had Jaguar’s, at this time they did not have any. In any event, the tour given by a volunteer from Britain (she had been there a year already) was wonderful. She was knowledgeable about all of the animals that they had in their rescue centre. We saw snakes (ahhhh – some of the most posionous ones), sloths (adolescents and babies), monkeys (adolescents and babies), a margay (small wild cat), an ant eater, tree frogs (sleeping of course), alligators, owls, hawks, parrots, and I am sure many others that have slipped my mind.
On our last day in Costa Rica we took a yoga class (trying to stretch some of our sore muscles), relaxed, and updated this blog. Tomorrow we head to Panama, our last stop in Central America!
